Why We Don’t Sell Duck Wings and Why It Doesn’t Matter

January 25, 2022 by Steve Snell

We don’t sell real duck wings on our website even though we could sell a bunch. I’m not sure the exact reason behind it but I know it has to do with duck being a federally controlled resource but they are migratory. I’m not sure if it’s illegal or just difficult but either way, we don’t sell them and it really doesn’t matter. Now I don’t say that because the use of feathers isn’t important in training your waterfowl Retreiver. It’s very important. Getting them comfortable with having feathers in their mouths is a big deal, they just don’t … [Read more...] about Why We Don’t Sell Duck Wings and Why It Doesn’t Matter

I Bring Back a Little Bit of Texas Every Trip

January 25, 2022 by Steve Snell

There’s something about the dirt in west Texas especially during a drought. It gets every where. You can’t escape it. No matter how many times I wash my hands, it’s still there. Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks for it to wear off. It’s a special dirt. I love to drive my lease roads with the window down on a warm day but my truck pays the price. There’s dirt on top of the dirt. The guy that details my truck loves it. When you catch the sun right you can see it floating in the air. I’m amazed that my dogs can smell anything. … [Read more...] about I Bring Back a Little Bit of Texas Every Trip

A Little Over 2000 Steps in A Mile

January 24, 2022 by Steve Snell

I think I’ve bird hunted all the possible ways that you can bird hunt. By that I mean the methods of travel. I grew up a foot hunter. We walked behind our bird dogs. I’ve hunted off of horseback. It’s a great way to see your dogs and for your dogs to see you. You can cover a lot of ground especially in the vast prairies of Montana and both Dakotas. I’ve hunted out of dune buggies, UTVs, Kawasaki “mules,” and side by sides that have dog boxes built in. It’s a great way to cover a lot of ground and carry a bunch of dogs and water … [Read more...] about A Little Over 2000 Steps in A Mile

Yesterday Was a Good Day

January 22, 2022 by Steve Snell

It’s hard to have a “bad” day quail hunting. It happens. I’ve had a few and my friends have too. A bad day usually means something happened to a dog. It’s rare but it happens. Yesterday was a good day. Nothing spectacular, but good. We walked a long way on new ground that I’m learning. The guys that I’m hunting with are two of my closest friends so that’s always good. But what made the day was the dog work. We didn’t find a lot of birds but every covey was pointed and the dogs did great. We walked in on every covey with solid bird … [Read more...] about Yesterday Was a Good Day

When Does Your Hunting Season End?

January 18, 2022 by Steve Snell

I have seen multiple national brands lately asking the questions “How was your season?” “How did your season go?”“Now that hunting season is over” Um….it’s not over. Heck, the good part is just starting. In our part of the world, duck season generally runs until the end of January. This can be the best time to duck hunt. Heck, some years, the ducks are just starting to show up. They are super smart and a challenge at times to get them to decoy but that’s the beauty of it. Quail season is rolling hard. It runs until the end of … [Read more...] about When Does Your Hunting Season End?
