One of the most common questions we get asked is “when do I start training my puppy?” The answer really seems to surprise most folks. You start training the first time you pick him up. What? That can’t be? Yep, it sure is. Every time you touch your dog some form of “training” is happening. Now it might not be “good training” but it is training. Every interaction with your pup will result in him learning. Every time you do something with him or let him “get away” with a behavior he learns what he can and can’t do. One of the … [Read more...] about When Do I Start Training my Puppy?

Yesterday Was a Good Day
It’s hard to have a “bad” day quail hunting. It happens. I’ve had a few and my friends have too. A bad day usually means something happened to a dog. It’s rare but it happens. Yesterday was a good day. Nothing spectacular, but good. We walked a long way on new ground that I’m learning. The guys that I’m hunting with are two of my closest friends so that’s always good. But what made the day was the dog work. We didn’t find a lot of birds but every covey was pointed and the dogs did great. We walked in on every covey with solid bird … [Read more...] about Yesterday Was a Good Day
Letter From A Customer
Some of y’all won’t believe me, but parts of my job aren’t fun. It’s like any other occupation. You have things that you have to do that you don’t like. It’s just part of it. They do call it work for a reason. But most of my job is pretty cool. I get to work with dogs and test dog gear and talk to folks about dog gear and think about dogs and dog gear. I do dig it. The other cool part of our job is the customers. Sure we have some interactions that go sideways but the majority of them are shopping for their dogs or we are helping … [Read more...] about Letter From A Customer
Dog Food for a Trip
I have nine dogs on my current bird dog string. We can be on the road for weeks at a time. I do my best to carry all the dog food that I will need for an entire trip. I feed Purina Pro Plan Performance (that’s a lot of Ps) and it can be purchased in a lot of places (Tractor Supply is usually a good bet), but I don’t like to leave things to chance. So I carry my dog food with me. Space is always limited so I want to carry very close to the exact amount I’ll need. This requires a little math. First I need to see how much food I’ll need per … [Read more...] about Dog Food for a Trip
When Does Your Hunting Season End?
I have seen multiple national brands lately asking the questions “How was your season?” “How did your season go?”“Now that hunting season is over” Um….it’s not over. Heck, the good part is just starting. In our part of the world, duck season generally runs until the end of January. This can be the best time to duck hunt. Heck, some years, the ducks are just starting to show up. They are super smart and a challenge at times to get them to decoy but that’s the beauty of it. Quail season is rolling hard. It runs until the end of … [Read more...] about When Does Your Hunting Season End?
Tougher Than Metal…
Every bird hunter has that one dog. The one that every other dog gets compared to. The one dog that no other dog will ever live up to. I am lucky. I have had two of them. Dee was my first bird dog, but Em is the reason I still bird hunt. I grew up hunting with Brittanys when they were still classified as Spaniels. My father preferred a closer working foot dog and he also wanted to have dogs that were different from everyone else’s. I always wanted pointers. Once we started hunting in Texas, I just could not get it out of my … [Read more...] about Tougher Than Metal…
